During our European tour, I tried to keep out of the way of The Police, and I was conscious not to overstep my mark. Sting was a big star, and with his blonde hair and blue eyes was many a girl’s heartthrob, but he always had time for me. It’s not something you abuse. I saw him once lying on a grass strip reading a book and he called out to me. I was looking around to see where all of his bodyguards had gone and was pleasantly surprised to see him happy and relaxed in his own company. Sting ran five miles every day and a couple of mornings we jogged together. The first mile we would be side-by-side but I would struggle to keep up with his pace and he would sprint off. His minder was huge and I would have my work cut out just to keep ahead of him. I also got on really well with Stewart Copeland. He was always filming my toasting. During the tour we would have competitions to see who had the best weed. I’d come every day with something stronger just to outdo him. It was the same when I got to know The Clash: if you had good weed you were cool and part of the clan.

Every night, there was always one member of The Police checking out our show from the side of the stage, which I took as a huge compliment, but for me, hearing Stewart play every night was something else. He’s a very clever fusion drummer and plays reggae his way. You only have to listen to ‘Walking On The Moon’, or ‘Roxanne’, with its back-to-front beat. I was obsessed with watching Stewart play. He is one of the best drummers I have ever seen. The Police may have had problems off stage but all of their anger and frustrations were released in the music. It made The Police. So many of their songs are classics and the noise they could make as a three-piece was brilliant.

When The Police reformed in 2007 to do a world tour I was as surprised as anybody. I hadn’t seen them for years. They were due to play the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham so I went down in my car and found my way in during the soundcheck. I was working my way down from the top of the tiered seating and I could see them playing on stage. I didn’t know whether to continue, and then one of their roadies spotted me and took me down to the stage. They were halfway through rehearsing a song and Sting stopped, and went, ‘Hey Roger! Come here,’ and gave me a big hug. Then he said, ‘Obviously you’re coming on with us tonight.’ I was just wearing a tracksuit, so I said, ‘Yeah, but I’ve got to go home and put some nice stage clothes on first and then I’ll come straight back.’ Sting said, ‘Did you drive here?’ I said, ‘Yeah, I parked by the tour bus.
